A Wrong Yeast Infections Diagnosis Can Be Dangerous

by Andy J. Xavier

There are only a few drugs that have been approved for the treatment of oral yeast infections. The problem comes up when we take into consideration that the cellular membrane of the yeast fungus is about the same as the cellular structure of the fungal membrane. So these approving agencies are very concerned that the drugs they approve for oral use are safe for human consumption and will only attack the fungal cell membranes. So it's easy to understand why there are only approximately ten compounds that have been cleared for oral treatment of yeast infections.

If you are a woman with a yeast infection, there are different actions you should avoid. Any sexual activity is one of the first things that you must stop during your treatment. Your vaginal tissues have already been compromised by the yeast infection and sexual intercourse could cause more damage. And then, there's also the real possibility that it could hurt. You want to avoid causing any further damage to the affected tissue since this could pose a risk of spreading the infection. Some people suggest using a tampon to insert over-the-counter creams into the vagina but, in reality, this is not a good idea. The tampons could possibly interfere with successful treatment by acting to absorb the particular medicine being used.

A lot of women don't heed that advice and still insist on diagnosing themselves and deciding on their own method of treatment. However, there may be more to your story, and the best course of action includes getting educated and considering a visit to your doctor.

What are some of the red flags you should watch out for that will make it expedient to see your doctor? If you are pregnant, it is imperative that you visit your doctor because the treatment will most likely be different. Another situation is if you have never experienced this type of infection before. Most women get yeast infections as a result of taking antibiotics. Frequent yeast infections that aren't caused by the use of antibiotics are something you definitely need to discuss with your doctor. Sexually transmitted infections must be evaluated and treated by your doctor. Don't try to treat it yourself.

Although many common yeast infections have very simple treatment methods, their are other, life threatening forms of yeast infections that can be very complicated to get rid of. These more serious cases are generally found in patients with compromised immune systems, such as cancer victims or those who are HIV positive. Some of these situations involve organ transplant patients who must rely on immune suppressing drugs. Radiation therapy is very important, but it causes the immune system to be depressed. Therefore, someone who has had to take a prolonged treatment with radiation is a prime candidate for a severe yeast infection.

To be sure you're protected against health issues such as this one, make sure you have sufficient medical insurance. Check with insurance companies for more information.
