The philosophy behind chiropractic adjustments is that the body, when properly aligned in both spinal and extremities, has the capability of healing itself. Some 22 million Americans agree with this philosophy, as studies show that that is the number of people seeking relief from pain, or as a preventive measure, via chiropractic adjustment. Over the years, chiropractors have had to earn their way into the mainstream of accepted medical care. The practice has come a long way in that regard. Many insurance carriers now recognize chiropractic adjustments as valuable and cover chiropractic treatments.

Chiropractic care focuses on themusculoskeletal system and the effects of disorders in this area.It is used to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches. Chiropractors practice a drug-free, hands-on-approach that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment using a technique known as spinal manipulation.

Treatment of back pain, frequent headache, joint inflammation and joint pain can often be eased by chiropractic adjustments. In addition, chiropractic adjustments have been found to provide overall benefits to the musculoskeletal system. In 2005 The World Health Organization moved to standardize chiropractic care, by establishing guidelines intended to ensure quality care and patient safety. The practice has moved into more mainstream acceptance. Some national chiropractic organizations in the U.S. are lobbying to move this kind of care into the realm of primary care because they believe in the preventive benefits of the practice.

In the U.S., all state licensing boards require completion of a four year program and a one year internship followed by passing a national and state board examinations. Passing of the national board examination leads to a Doctorate of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree. After acquiring a license, many states ask chiropractors to acquire an additional hours of continuing education per year.

Almost daily our bodies experience minor trauma, such as falls, repetitive movement, sitting without proper back support, If untreated, these traumas can lead to a host of more serious medical problems and injuries. Good chiropractic care is the easiest, least invasive way to properly align muscles, joints, bones and connective tissue in a way that restores the proper biomedical functioning of the joints and can prevent the need for more serious medication or medical care in some cases.

Adjustments using this technique are called high velocity, low amplitude thrusts, and they are intended to create motion in specific places in the spine or neck, or in joints to restore function and proper structure to the joint or spine. During chiropractic adjustments, a "popping" sound is heard. This "osseous" as it is called, is simply gas being released from the tiny bubbles that exist in bodily fluids that surround the joint. Chiropractors do not limit their scope to pain relief but, also use chiropractic adjustments as a diagnostic tool to determine if there are root causes of pain and or illness that can be eliminated.
